Definition: Adaptive physical education is the practice of individualizing a child's physical education program to meet his or her needs based on the individual education program. Adaptive physical education involves assessment of a child's physical and intellectual abilities and incorporating that information to developing a physical education program that enables the child to benefit from the program and participate safely and appropriately. Adaptive physical education programs are often developed by the physical education teacher, occupational therapist, and physical therapist.
Examples:
Adaptive physical education is required for children who need the service by IDEA (20 USC Section 1401 (a)(16)).
