Assistive Technology Enhances Learning, Working, and Living

Monday June 30, 2008
Assistive technology (AT) is any type of technology used to support people with disabilities. AT can be as complex as computerized augmentative speech assistance devices or as simple as use of a calculator. Use of AT can increase your child's achievement in school and possibly improve his ability to participate more fully in inclusive classrooms or collaborative special education programs.

If you believe your child needs an assistive technology device at school, request an IEP team meeting to discuss it. In some instances, the IEP team may need more information before making the investment. They will want to determine:

  • the specific skill deficits your child has that need the support of technology;
  • if there is a more readily available way to serve the need; and
  • if further AT evaluation is needed to determine if and what type of technology is needed.
Before you or your child's school make that purchase, review these tips for choosing the right AT.

For adults in the workplace, assistive technology can improve productivity and independence for workers with disabilities. Likewise, AT can be used by senior citizens to improve their quality of life, independence, and social interactions.
