My Best Tip for Living with Disabilities
If you're the parent of a child with disabilities, try so hard to focus on the progress your child is making instead of peering into the future and wondering what he or she will "be" like.
My Best Tip for Making a Difference
Find meaningful ways of connecting with people you can help. For me, that means writing my blog and answering emails from moms who email me, asking for advice.
Why I Care About Disabilities - My Story
My little boy, Max, had a stroke at birth that resulted in brain damage, and an eventual diagnosis of cerebral palsy. He defies the doomsaying doctors every single day.

Advice
- Talk about your worries. With friends, with other parents of kids with special needs, with people in support groups, with a therapist.
- Find ways to savor your child. It's so easy to get caught up in all the medical drama. Enjoy your child now. For example, set up regular photo shoots at home. Your child is not the least bit cuteness challenged.
- Quit paying attention to major milestones. Relish the mini ones.
- Don't beat yourself up. You can't do everything for your child all of the time; do the best that you can.
- Take time for yourself.
