Reading Comprehension Strategies

Read for Detail and Improve Comprehension

By , About.com Guide

Children with in learning disabilities in reading comprehension and basic reading skills struggle with finding meaning in stories. This quick tip can help your child gain better understanding of details in stories.
  • Select a story at your child's reading level. Her teacher or librarian can help you choose.
  • Read the story with your child.
  • Share the Detail Detective worksheet with your child, and tell him that you're going to read the story together again. This time, you will think about what the characters see, smell, hear, touch, and taste in the story.
  • As you read, be aware of descriptive words that explain the characters' experiences. Pause to talk about those sense experiences with your child.
  • Help your child write brief notes on the worksheet. If your child cannot write them independently, provide assistance.
  • Practice this activity occasionally, and keep the experience light and game-like.
Over time, your child will begin to notice more detail in stories and may even begin using more detail in her own writing.
