Ways to Teach with Flashcards
- Start with four animals flashcards. Read each flashcard aloud, pointing to the word as you read. Have your child repeat the animal word by saying, "Your turn, read (say the name of the animal)." Pause for his response.
- As your child's confidence grows, stop giving him your spoken prompt. Have him read the cards independently.
- If he struggles, it is okay to remind him of the names of the animals.
- After he masters the first four flashcards, add one more card. Repeat the steps above until he has learned them all.
- Continue this process until all cards are learned.
- When you introduce cards, mix easier words with the harder words. Mixing in animal words your child already knows may build confidence.
- After your child has mastered the flashcards this way, try the time delay method, a quick and easy flashcard teaching method to help your child memorize the animal sight words.
When your child has mastered reading the words and matching them to the animal pictures, it is time to start working with the sight words alone. Use the time delay technique to help your child learn the words without the picture prompts.
For a fun elementary level group activity, make four copies of the flashcards, cut them out, and use to play Go Fish.
