Learning the alphabet is a basic pre-reading skill. You can teach the alphabet with
this alphabet matching card game that you can download. Ways to use the alphabet matching game cards:
- For beginning readers, cut out the alphabet cards by rows, leaving each letter attached to its matching picture card. Look at each card with your child, and say the name of the letter while pointing at the letter. Say the name of the item in the picture while pointing to it. Encourage your child to say the alphabet letters and names of items with you. Work your way through the stack for a couple of minutes every day until your child has learned the letters and pictures.
- At the next level, separate the letters from the names. Shuffle the cards, and lay them out on a table. Have the child find the matching pairs and place them aside. Play this matching game until your child can independently make the matches.
- This flash card teaching technique can be helpful with many types of flashcards.
