Respondent - What Is a Respondent?

Definition: Respondent: In a special education formal complaint or due process hearing, the term respondent refers to the school district or agency accused of wrongdoing.

Also Known As: A respondent in special education due process hearings is similar to a defendant in a court proceeding.

Examples:
The respondent in the complaint denied the parent's allegations in the due process hearing.
