Plaintiff - What Is a Plaintiff in a Due Process Hearing or Court Proceeding?

Definition: In a court proceeding, the term plaintiff refers to the party who filed the suit accusing a school district, service provider, or agency of wrongdoing. In some states, plaintiff also refers to the party filing a formal complaint or due process hearing.

Also Known As: complainant

Examples:
The plaintiff filed a formal complaint with the state department of education.
