Thank you mom for supporting your child by:
- setting your own interests aside to help with homework, no matter what the hour;
- comforting your child when he felt ready to give up;
- learning how to be your child's most important teacher;
- bravely facing your child's limitations and turning them into opportunities for growth;
- advocating for your child in IEP team meetings that were not always friendly;
- having the courage to confront people who do not have your child's interests in mind;
- dealing with awkward comparisons and criticisms from family and acquaintances who do not understand or value your child's differences;
- being a steady guiding force for your child's education until she can manage it for herself;
- helping your child through social experiences with support and understanding;
- encouraging your child to develop strengths and nurture his talents in things he enjoys;
- being at peace with who your child is, and not who others think she should be;
- knowing when to support and when to let your child meet his own challenges;
- creating a warm and supportive home; and
- supporting your other children without disabilities and nurturing their growth as well.
