In most cases, a student's vision must be screened for problems before he can be referred for evaluation of suspected learning disabilities. Students who fail vision screenings are typically referred to an optometrist for diagnosis of problems and to determine the need for vision correction such as glasses.
If an optometrist's examination is needed as part of a formal assessment under the IDEA, the school district must ensure the service is provided at no cost to the parent for the examination. The IDEA does not require school districts to purchasing glasses or cover treatment of medical conditions. However, many school districts will work with parents to help them identify resources to help pay for services and glasses if the family is unable to pay.
