As parents of children with learning disabilities, you'll find all kinds of information and products on the web. Some of it is good. Some of it is not. The old adage that if something sounds too good to be true it probably is also applies to the web. As you're reviewing websites, books, programs, and products, it is important to remember that:
- There are no shortcuts in overcoming learning disabilities. It takes hard work on the part of the child, her teachers, and parents.
- One size does not fit all. What works for one child may not work for another. A good evaluation, parents' input, and teachers' opinions must all be considered to determine appropriate instruction for children.
- Some packaged programs are helpful, but teachers often employ a range of different strategies to meet children's needs.
- No program can ensure that your child's disability will be cured. Legitimate programs may estimate goals but will not make promises. Ask about money back guarantees, and check out independent research on a program before you buy it.
