It's Midterm - Do You Suspect a Learning Disability?
We had our first snow flurries of the year today, and a child I saw at the store was already excited. "Do you think we'll get out of school?" he chattered to his mom. "I hope we get enough to play in." As it turned out, we didn't get enough for a snow day, but we will before long. I can't believe the school year is half over. While you're sipping hot cocoa and planning your holiday festivities, it's time to review your child's educational progress so far. Make notes of any questions you have for your child's teacher. If you have concerns, drop your child's teacher an email, schedule a meeting, or check on the school's plan for your child's annual review.
If your child is experiencing problems, it is best to seek help now rather than to wait until the end of the school year. This will give teachers time to implement intervention strategies that may help, and if necessary, initiate a referral for evaluation. A thorough assessment will help diagnose disabilities and provide helpful information for your child's teachers on how to meet your child's needs.
If you are just beginning to expect your child has a learning disability, now is a good time to become familiar with the signs your child may have a disability.
